Week Two Recap

The theme was Proportion and in contrast to last week’s Origin theme we were once again asked to think bigger and think about wishing for something to happen in our lives and how our ‘believing mirrors’ can both help and support us in our artistic journey. In pairs we discussed the questions that Julia Cameron poses about our childhood background and whether we had or didn’t have parental and family support for any artistic aspirations. We were asked to think about any early artistic interests that were shelved or discarded perhaps reluctantly.

As always, there is just never enough time but as I told the minister in consideration to the tai chi people who follow us at 1 p.m. I was more conscious of the time factor and stayed ON the clock still allowing some time to have a bit of cut and paste play time making or just starting an Artist Trading Cards. Some participants made a card in the about 15 minutes alloted and some had a do-able make and take project to take home with them. In Mexico, when my group met right in my living dining room I had my dining room table all set up for weekly art/play time which sometimes lasted the rest of the afternoon after the 12 to 2 session.

In any case, because of the off site location I told the participants that I would offer an optional 50 peso (approximately two twonies/4.) OR bring an art supply to share Friday drop in Artist Trading Card drop in workshop at my residence in South Nanaimo. I hosted these drop in workshops in my apartment in Ajijic where we had lots of fun and laughs. I supplied coffee, tea and snacks and sometimes we went for lunch or dinner afterwards.

In terms of the weekly format approximately half the session is the check in time telling the group their very personal and individual experience with the three basic Artist Way Tools of Morning Pages, an Artist Date and an Artist Walk. I shared my Osho cards so we picked a card with a word that miraculously matched our state of mind or reminded us about one of our current life issues or whatever. So even though the check in is a constant anything can and sporadically does happen which might make the thematic part of the session shorter or adapted.

Since I built in some brief ATC making time I condensed and shortened two of the three tasks from the chapter to fit the time constraints. NEXT week, after a brief inspiration card sharing we will flip the order of the last two weeks and start with the them of Perspective so that we can give it our full attention and thoughtful consideration.

And finally, you can look forward to getting the disposable fountain pen that I told everyone I would include with the course. Personally I just love these pens, love to write with them and somehow the words just flow better. I had thought I needed to make a trip to Victoria to Opus Art Supply store (which is kind of a finanacially dangerous place haha) but lo and behold Bic has come out with a disposable fountain pen and it is available at Staples. So you will get your first disposable fountain pen as promised and you can use it or not…but do try it out and see if it makes a difference in the flow of the morning pages.

It does for me but I’m kind of a retrogrrl and this kind of pen reminds me of first learning cursive writing in school which in those long ago days was actually carefully taught and graded. In fact, I loved cursive writing so much I think I entered my handwriting in some competitions winning some ribbons or something like that. However, looking at my handwriting these days you absolutely would not believe this. When I had to teach handwriting to Grade 3s in my ‘previous life’ I had to really reteach the proper stokes myself first.

Well, perhaps I’ll post some additional content tomorrow after church but for now a Quentin Tarantino movie awaits from THE number one video store in Nanaimo conveniently located close to my suite called Film Buff Video owned by Clinton who goes to TIFF/Toronto Film Festival each and every year and lives, breathes, sleeps movies and is a bottomless well of movie info both serious and behind the scenes trivial. And his memory! He can quote movie lines from movies he’s seen years ago even the more obscure ones. IF you still like video stores and are mourning their ‘drive in’ like disappearance do stop in at Film Buff Video on Tenth Street at South Gate Plaza South conveniently located right beside Serious Coffee.

And speaking of which here is my Artist Date for the week. I usually have more than one but it bears noting that Serious Coffee has live music on Fridays and Saturdays from about 5:30 p.m. until about 8 o’clock and since I was accidentally in there checking my email on my smartphone I hung around for a bit. Excellent band with a wide repertoire was playing to a smallish but appreciative crowd of locals from the ‘hood. Well worth checking out on subsequent weeks when I am at loose ends and feel like a no cover music venue. I simply must add before I sign off for now that I am quite impressed with the live music scene here in Nanaimo!

Hasta domingo/Until Sunday…

Miracles/Milagros

Well, time to update the blog with some new and exciting developments relating to the Nanaimo Artist Way. A muy grande gracias to all the powerful, empowered artistic, creative women in our Tuesday morning group! I am so excited to be going on AND facillitating this journey through the second book, ‘Walking in the World.’ Even though I did this second book way back in Penticton a number of years ago each group is always, always fresh and new and reborn into it’s glorious unfolding each and every week!

Okay, now to the miracles. Well, for starters last Tuesday night there were four members of this group at the hugely successful I Love My Life Nanaimo first ever Swap and Shop and I’m sure everyone was able to find a few treasures in the new2you category. I personally found an Old Navy top and Calvin Klein pants(including length) both of which fit perfectly so I must have a body double somewhere here in the Harbour City! And best of all three out of the four of us won very useful prizes ranging from a sizable gift certificate, a beautiful handmade capelet and I won some very useful Tupperware items.

But I digress, since the last Tuesday session where we had just a small taste of how much fun it is to make Artist Trading Cards I’ve actually started collecting pictures and inspiration on Pinterest which I registered for ages ago. I will share some of the links and give you my Pinterest name in case you are also registered on Pinterest and want to be my first follower! I’ve just started re-pinning way cool boards about Artist Trading Cards and it’s very easy to just not know where to start there are soooooooooo many way cool boards that other people have handily annotated and collected so you just never have to reinvent the wheel. For new and aspiring Pinterestati simply go to http://www.pinterest.com and put in Artist Trading Cards and you will be dazzled and delighted with the marvelous selection for sure!

The next post will be about a very special internationally famous artist called SARK which one of our two Janes reminded me of. I’m sure I once bought a calendar with her bright, colorful cheerful artwork and she is very active currently on the net and has been releasing some new video content. Check out http://planetsark.com/about-sark/ to have a peek at this extraordinary (or succulent to use her adjective) woman and her very joyful art. As an incest survivor her life story is one of both survival, struggle, redemption, renewel, rediscovery and yes, forgiveness for her brother. The video on this link shows SARK live relating her incredible journey on a TED Talk.

You might have seen her very famous and best selling poster, ‘How to Be an Artist.’ I’m sure I had a copy on one of my classroom walls at some point but naturally when I retired I donated and left a whole lot behind at my very last elementary school. She also wrote ‘Succulent, Wild Women’, also a best seller.

Artist Walk

ajijicartistway

Since I’ve been back I’ve done a lot of walking because I only insure my car for six months so tomorrow, April 15th is the big day! Since there is no bus into this neighbourhood I’ve been mostly catching a ride into the nearest shopping area where there is a bus and then walking home to my patio suite in the ‘burbs.’ On sunny days it’s been great and I’m used to walking around the village. But the view is certainly different. Every walk in Ajijic turned up something interesting; sights or sounds or events or people. Walking back to the burbs is fairly uneventful and there s not much to see but I’ve gathered a few interesting found items that I will do something with later on. I also found a Starbucks card with money still on it so the universe dispenses it s endless abundance in many mysterious…

Three Basic Tools for All Three Books Morning Pages

For the people who are familiar with the first book this will not be anything new. What is new is that what has happened since the first book in terms of technology, YouTube and the like. Julia Cameron has a very active presence online and she is doing some of her speaking and teaching in an online forum for members who have paid the approximately 150. USD sign up fee. I have not done so…yet. Maybe it will be a good birthday gift to myself next month on my very first island birthday!

But I digress. Let’s start at the beginning because that’s where everything starts. It’s the first domino so to speak in a long line of upright dominoes.

Morning Pages simply put are three long hand pages of stream of consciousness writing that you do (or make a valiant effort!) to write first thing in the morning. I have done them later in the morning, later in the afternoon, in a wifi cafe, a restaurant, a bar, last thing at night but really I endorse Julia’s assertion that first thing in the morning is best when you are still waking up and you haven’t ‘downloaded’ your day to use the common vernacular. Some people have asked her and continue to ask her why long hand, why not on a computer and her reply is that a different brain process occurs when you are composing with a pen in your hand.

The Simple Abundance author calls her ‘brain drain’ the daily dialogue which it certainly is as it is a ‘monkey mind’ conversation with yourself that doesn’t make sense and doesn’t have to make sense at all. You just keep writing even if you have nothing to say until you fill up three pages. I’m using a slightly smaller diary/notebook than I was in Mexico because I seem to have more things competing for my time and attention than in Mexico. In my apartment there I had no television, no internet and my days unfolded very naturally as my neighbour gradually woke up and the garbage truck went down the street, then the gas vendors and then the water guy delivering water tanks and so on. Back here in Canada the pace is soooooo much faster despite my best intentions.

In any case what this author suggest is to do at least two pages and then just before bed to write a page of reflections on the day. Julia says don’t read your morning pages immediately because they will make very little sense and will probably contain a lot of bitching, wining and complaining ad nauseum but it you persist you WILL get past this and surprising thoughts will occur to you or even insights or revelations or ‘messages’ from your higher self. Please take this on faith at the beginning even if you are skeptical. Try to write something anything every single day even it it’s not three pages and definitely do NOT beat yourself up if you can only manage two pages or even one.

Here is what Julia Cameron has to say about why the Morning Pages are three pages.

Tuesday Night’s Shop and Swap Event

The topic of closet clearing came out of one of the tasks of the first chapter’s theme of Origin. In this chapter Julie Cameron asks us to make a list of small even baby steps we can take to move us forward into a richer more rewarding creative life. One thing on Julia’s list had to do with closet cleaning. Viewing my closet is like looking at a visual archive of my past sizes.

It was very therapeutic to release both my skinny clothes, my fat clothes and have a second look at what’s REALLY left that I actually wear. The impetus for this came from a desire to attend the first ever

Nanaimo Shop and Swap Event at the Wellington Hall from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th. The concept is that for the price of 15 dollars you have the opportunity to bring ten or more items, shop around at a variety of interesting vendors while the organizers do a quick power sort then I guess it’s every woman for herself in the swapping department as you survey and select the same number of items that you brought in. Any left over items are donated to the Haven House so basically it’s a win win situation for everyone!

The event is organized by the I Love My Life ladies in support of the fine community support work being done by the Haven House. I have pledged to post an after picture of my closet. The before picture was just far too scary to go public haha…and since I actually paid to move these clothes across the Georgia Strait from Penticton when I sold my house to move here the only question on my mind seems to be…What WAS I thinking?’

On the upside I can easily flip the remaining hangars of clothes that I actually like (now THAT’s a unique concept!) fit well and most important of all like and do wear. I believe that I read somewhere that we typically only wear 20 percent of our total wardrobe and as I view the piles of discards for the Sally Ann and for the Shop and Swap I’m starting to think this is a valid statistic.

The next postings will be more about the THREE basic Artist Way tools that we did talk and discuss at last week’s class. Just a reminder to keep writing those morning pages in longhand stream of consciousness fashion, take yourself on a solo artist date and now that it’s spring it’s getting much more pleasant to just even have a walk around your own neighourhood!

Namaste. Have a spectacular Sunday! Joanne

A Few Links About Artist Trading Cards

Good evening, Artist Way Creative Cluster,

I do want to go through each of the three Artist Way tools in more detail and depth but since we were a bit pressed for time on the first session due to the meet and greet introductions I thought I’d start with a posting about ATCs as they are commonly called. In a nutshell, ATCs are miniature original works of art in ANY medium at all. The only standard is that they be the size of a North American playing card (Mexican playing cards are a slightly different size) and that they are always traded and never sold.

At the first session I passed out a starter collection of ephemera that I basically had left over from my group in Mexico. In Ajijic I did offer a selection of mini mixed media workshops after the weekly theme because I had the session right at my apartment/arte salon which was a dedicated studio space and then later the Luna Azul open studio space for six artists during the annual Ajijic Society of the Arts Open Studio tour.

Since our Nanaimo group is in a church which I only found out last Tuesday is followed by a tai chi group naturally I’ve had to modify and adapt the program to fit the space and time allotment. I also realize that a few participants have to leave either slightly before noon or right at noon. I will certainly be more conscious of this factor in subsequent sessions so don’t worry that you will be missing anything. I wil also continue to update this blog to expand and enrich the material that we will be using. I will also be making reference to the book and listing page numbers so you can look things up along the way.

I also gave everyone in attendance a baggie filled with 12 repurposed cards to use in the making of ATCs. The idea is that to get going on just a baby step toward creating something/anything with any medium I am providing a starter collection of ephemera to cut/tear/paint over/glue on top you name it. Naturally you can add your own materials and ephemera and use some/all/none of the starter collection I gave you. Same goes for the cards. You can make 1/6/12 or zero. It’s completely up to you. This is entirely my idea based on what was well received in my recent Mexican group. My group really got into these little works of art and had lots of fun making them on their own or collectively. Next Tuesday at the end of Session 2 I will make sure to give you at least 20 to 30 minutes to just do some random cutting and pasting for say a collage or some sort.

In any case, here are some links to inspire you that you can look at now OR after you’ve made a unique creation of your own! There is no right OR wrong way to make a card. In my Mexican group some participants initially were too intent on making a mini masterpiece and they may have not liked their early efforts but when they relaxed and leaned into the/their muse the whole experience was easier and much more fun so go ahead and try it out before the next class if you want.

On purpose I filled the starter kits with more or less similar materials as an experiement. I’m very interested to see what people come up with using more or less similar materials. I would dare say with the Mexicana ephemera you will find things not available locally. And personally I just love including some type of text even if it is unintelligible or foreign in a work of art.

1000 Images Of Artist Trading Cards

http://www.joggles.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=12569

This is a fabuloso book which I may order myself but if you google Artist Trading Card Images and scroll down a bit to 1000 Artist Trading Cards you can look inside the book and see some great ATCs.

First Session/ Theme: Origin

I am very pleased to announce that our first session attracted 12 participants. I told the minister that I would prep for 12 participants and lo and behold some people didn’t show up who said they would and one person showed up at the last minute so all chairs were taken.

The first part of the session being the first session was of course, the meet and greet section. We are a very diverse group of spectacular women embarking on a very special ‘magical mystery tour’ to use an old Beatle phrase.

The first order of business is to first of all establish the parameters of the ‘sacred circle’ of confidentiality. This was followed by a discussion about the three basic Artist Way tools.

The first is Morning Pages which is three pages of stream of consciousness longhand writing.

The second is the Artist Date.

The third is the Artist Walk.

After a tea break we launched right into the first theme which is Origin which is most fitting as you have to start exactly where you are. The one task I chose for the group to do was to think about 3 ‘baby’ steps that you could take in any area of your life that would make a positive difference. The group came up with lots of very interesting ideas to be sure.

Action is eloquence.  William Shakespeare

Just before we wrapped up I passed out a started kit for making Artist Trading Cards. We were kind of running out of time but I decided to pass out the kits and a baggie of a dozen cards. Next time I will start the session by explaining in more detail what the ATC ongoing project is. In a nutshell, ATCs are playing card sized pieces of original art in ANY medium at all.  As the starter kits contained more or less the same materials it will be very interesting to see what comes in during our 12 week journey through Walking in the World, Julia Cameron’s second book.

As ATCs have been around for quite a while there are lots of fascinating sites on the internet to check out like:
